Understanding the Page Interface

Get familiar with all the parts of a page and how to use them.


Page Layout Overview

When you open a page, you'll see several key areas:

1. Breadcrumbs

Location: Top of the page, below the main header

What it shows: Your current location in the page hierarchy

Pages > Product Docs > Getting Started > Installation

Features:

  • Click any breadcrumb to navigate to that page
  • Last item (current page) is not clickable
  • Shows full path from root to current page

2. Page Title & Header

Location: Top section, prominently displayed

Components:

  • 📄 Icon: File icon (can be customized)
  • Title: Large, bold page name
  • Favorite Button: Star icon to add to favorites

Actions:

  • Click title area in Edit mode to change the title
  • Click star icon to favorite/unfavorite

3. Icon & Cover

Location: At the very top (when set)

What it includes:

  • Icon: Emoji or symbol representing the page
  • Cover: Large banner image

How to add:

  • Icons: Click "Add icon" button, select emoji
  • Cover: Click "Add cover" button, upload image

4. Tags

Location: Below the title, above content

Appearance: Small colored chips with tag names

Features:

  • Click X on a tag to remove it
  • Click input field to add new tags
  • Autocomplete shows existing tags

5. Read/Edit Toggle

Location: Top-right of the content area

Buttons:

  • 👁️ "Switch to Read": View mode (no editing)
  • ✏️ "Switch to Edit": Edit mode (full editing)

Keyboard Shortcut: Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + E

6. Main Content Area

In Edit Mode

Shows all editing tools:

  • Block toolbar: Buttons to add different block types
  • Block controls: Drag handles, formatting options, delete buttons
  • Save status: "Saving..." or "✓ Saved" indicator
  • Undo/Redo buttons: History navigation

In Read Mode

Clean, formatted display:

  • No input fields or buttons
  • Beautiful typography
  • Formatted content (headings, lists, code, etc.)
  • Static, read-only view

7. Block Toolbar

Location: Top of content area (Edit mode only)

Buttons available:

8. Block Controls

Each block has controls (when hovered or focused):

Drag Handle (⋮⋮):

  • Drag to reorder blocks
  • Also shows block type

Formatting Toolbar:

  • B Bold
  • I Italic
  • U Underline
  • S Strikethrough
  • <> Inline code
  • 🔗 Link
  • ↑ Move up
  • ↓ Move down
  • 📋 Duplicate
  • 🗑️ Delete

Location: Right side panel

What it shows:

  • Pages that link to this page
  • Context where the link appears
  • Link count

Features:

  • Click a backlink to navigate to that page
  • Shows "(context snippet)" from the linking page

10. Status Indicators

Save Status (Edit mode)

Shows at bottom of editor:

  • "Saving...": Changes being saved
  • "✓ Saved": All changes saved
  • "Save failed": Error occurred

History Controls (Edit mode)

  • Undo button: Disabled when at start of history
  • Redo button: Disabled when at end of history

Responsive Layout

The interface adapts to screen size:

Desktop:

  • Full 3-column layout (nav, content, sidebar)
  • All features visible

Tablet:

  • Content and sidebar stack vertically
  • Collapsible navigation

Mobile:

  • Single column
  • Touch-optimized controls
  • Swipe gestures for navigation

Interface Modes

Edit Mode (Default)

  • All controls visible
  • Input fields editable
  • Block toolbar shown
  • Autosave active

Read Mode

  • Clean, distraction-free reading
  • No editing controls
  • Beautiful typography
  • Static content

Tips for Navigation

  1. Use breadcrumbs for quick hierarchy navigation
  2. Favorite important pages for easy access
  3. Check backlinks to see connected content
  4. Toggle Read mode when reviewing or presenting
  5. Use keyboard shortcuts for faster navigation
